Book Review- Amulet by Nancy Lee Parish

Things have begun. Darius leaves the bundle for Tristen to find while leading the riders away from it. He gets captured but Tristen finds the bundle and the amulet. His life is now about to change forever. He is now the owner of one of the twelve amulets that make dragons. He believed dragons a myth until he saw them himself. The Ecli are searching for all the amulets to possess the power they contain. Yet each of the four Ecli have their own agenda. Riders are sent to find Tristen and the amulet. Tristen is not safe and those that protect him know he must flee to the Volanari.
His dragon and his sister’s dragon join the group as they travel to safety. Trubac, Solerin, Seneca and Krill, the members of the Ecli, are all in pursuit for different reasons. All want the black crystal that searches out the bloodline of Helios. It turns out there is more to the story as Tristen learns who he really is and why they are being chased by the Ecli.
The Draken join forces with Krill to gain the crystal. A huge black dragon is called forth. Krill also brings Roshan back to life as the battle plans are being drawn. Tristen ends up at Belka’s where she reveals more secrets as they discuss what the next move is.
The battle begins as Krill is determined to destroy them all gaining the power he wants. The dragon blade is his ultimate goal. It will take them all working together to defeat him.
In this first book in the Dragon Blade Series, the storyline is a good one. It centers around a young man who is more than he seems. There are lots of secrets swirling through this story. Solerin is not who he seems. It is fascinating to watch as things are revealed. There is always something going on no matter what part of the story. Unfortunately I felt like there was too much jumping around and the flow of the story wasn’t as smooth as it could have been in places.
However my favorite part of the story is the dragons. I also like Thoral. He is a big, tough guy with a soft heart. He was cute with the dragons. I also liked how the group came together to protect each other and work together. They learn to trust each other and basically become a family. It is an adventurous story for a younger audience. The first book in a YA series of fantasy. It is a good start. I give it a 3 out of 5.

Amulet DragonBlade Book 1 edition by Nancy Lee Parish Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

There are lots of stories with dragons, spewing fire, swords, fairies and even tall tales that ride a wave and go nowhere.

When I read Nance Lee Parish's Amulet, I actually got caught up in the story. The characters were charming, the setting vivid and what would normally be silliness made sense. The author doesn't waste much time getting things rolling, and all of sudden you are captured within the story and find you must keep reading to see where it goes..

My grandchildren love a good dragon tale so I try to find books that might excite their imagination and thought this would do that. I was right. They too loved the book and the way the author describes the setting, the dragons, the Amulet and all the curves the road offers which creates choices and mystery. Oh I enjoy a good fun ride like anyone else, but this was a very nice surprise and the journey was worth it and more. The read was fun and best of all it fed the imagination with just the right amount of intrigue to make it all work. Who among us doesn't like a baby dragon, or bad guys and danger? The Amulet is meant to be fun and fun it is.
When elves and dwarves and magical lost artifacts are featured in a novel, the assumption will often be cheap, derivative Tolkien knockoff. Well, we all know the old saying about assumptions, so leave them at the door and enter the world of a novel that will not only mess with your expectations but completely confound them.

Sure, you could read Amulet as a fairly standard sword-and-sorcery epic, but it is also different in a variety of ways, both subtle and obvious. There are dragons involved, yet no captive princesses. There are amulets, but their significance is not simple or obvious. There is a talking dog who will make you laugh out loud. There are heroes and villains, but how their stories play out is anything but predictable or hackneyed. There is a breathless spirit of adventure to this novel, which never sags despite its relative length, never calls attention to itself in language terms, every word serving the story and not the author's ego. Unlike many other novels in the genre, it's clear Amulet is not even *attempting* a Tolkien rip, aside from one or two unavoidable tropes.

Is it an independent novel? Yes. Are there editing/proofreading issues? *Yes. But to be quite honest, they are relatively minor, and eminently forgivable due to the sheer energy and exuberance Nancy Lee Parish brings to her story. She is clearly a born storyteller, and I've worked very hard in this review not to drop spoilers that would work against the perfectly-timed plot revelations she sets up here. Put simply, this is an adventure yarn with a well-drawn ensemble cast that carries you along in its expertly-constructed wake, and I recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining novel you can enjoy for both its intricate storyline and its even more complex and endearing characters.

*Turns out I had an older copy and the upgrade has been further edited and formatted, so as long as you purchase the most recent edition, even this won't be an issue.
I give Amulet 3 stars for the theme of the story only. The plot was poorly thought out and the characters did not have a lot of depth to them. The author could not decide whether each one was a good guy or a bad guy. Not only that but the book read like someone was telling me a story rather than I was living the story.
The only ones that seemed to stay in character were Bub and Thoral.
A telepathic dog (even with his own dragon) was a nice touch but that was messed up with his sense of humor. The dog made an idiot of himself by falling out, rolling with laughter and " woo hoo-ing" over things that was only mildly amusing.
There was also too many discrepancies in the book. Too many times one character would say or do something then a few pages later it was a different character that said or did that.
Overall, I don't think I will be reading the next book.
