When I was a freshman in college and completely out of my depth in Lit 1, the teacher, Jay Farness, assigned this among other works. Everything JF assigned was revelatory--how lucky is that? But even with all the excitement at reading that great 60s anthology, Naked Poetry, I found my encounters with GM Hopkins to be the most profound. I wasn't religious and hadn't a clue about Catholicism, which informs his poetry, yet its intense, clotted rhyme schemes, the spikey spirituality and the way Hopkins invented terms to describe his method ("inscape" for one's interior psychological landscape) just clicked.I recently met with a young Japanese national studying and working in Hawaii who had been given a copy of the same edition I had assigned to me in 1970. Her hands trembled as she opened the book to "The Windhover." She asked, in that way readers will, "Have you ever read this?" I quoted the opening lines. Still magic.

way out of my league..
Outstanding
I've never been much of a poetry fan. Several people I respect had mentioned they found great pleasure reading Gerard Manley Hopkins. This is an excellent introduction for the p[rice. I'm not saying I am becoming a poetry fan, but learning to understand the form.
This kindle edition is a misunderstanding. Small matter that there is no table of contents to navigate it. But the text has no formating! The poems, not divided into verses, run like prose! Chaos, and a waste of time. I guess you get what you pay for, but still..
I was very disappointed with this e-book. As another reviewer wrote, the lack of a table of contents makes it practically useless--unless you want to read page by page by page...in hopes that you might eventually happen upon what you want. This is a rip-off, even at $0.00! I can order a used hard copy for less than the other options, which is exactly what I will do after deleting this book. I wish I had read a review before excitedly adding it to my kindle.
Advising someone to read Hopkins is like advising the study of Czech - no doubt rewarding but difficult. The rewards in Hopkins' case are incredible, If you can follow his rollrock highroad roaring down you will arrive at a place of splendid clarity and joy.
For an insightful biography of Hopkins' later years, intertwined with an explication of his greatest work, try +Exiles" by Ron Hansen, a very good contemporary novelist.
When I was furnishing my young mind, some sixty years ago, I laid down a good supply of Hopkins' poetry to last me until old age.
Many of the poems I learned then are still in good shape. Some needed to be freshened up a bit.
This is a nicely presented collection, and it's pleasant to have it at hand. Yes, I have hard copy, and a book on paper is the best of treasures.
But the words are at hand, in or laptop, when I want The Windhover or Pied Beauty, and don't find it perfectly in my memory.
Hopkins, a young Jesuit priest, was torn by love for God, the pain of living, and a need to understand why we're here.
The poems he wrote in his quest are helpful to all of us who also seek God and love.
